Visual effects, abbreviated VFX, is a term used to describe imagery created, manipulated or enhanced for any film, or other moving media that cannot take place during live-action shooting.
Visual effects are traditionally divided into the categories of optical effects and mechanical effects. With the emergence of digital film-making a distinction between special effects and visual effects has grown, with the latter referring to digital post-production while "special effects" referring to mechanical and optical effects. More recently, the term visual effects has come to encompass all on-screen image manipulation using a computer.
Visual Effects can be broken down into:
- Compositing (elements from different sources are combined into one image)
- Motion tracking (the motion of one object is transferred onto another)
- Modelling (a virtual model is created for use in animation)
- Animation (virtual actors, creatures, scenery and objects move within a scene)
- Texturing (a base of colour and other attributes is applied to a model)
- Lighting (virtual light sources are placed in a scene to create shadows and reflections)
- Rendering (the final image is created as all previous elements are combined)
